Sofa Bed Buying Guide: Click-Clack, Pull-Out and Corner Sofa Beds

How to choose a sofa bed: the main mechanisms, how big it is when open, how comfortable it will be for guests and the practical checks before you buy.

A sofa bed is two pieces of furniture in one: a sofa for daily use and a bed for guests. It is the sensible answer in a small home, a home office or any room that has to do two jobs. The trick is choosing the mechanism and size that suit how you will use it.

The main types

Click-clack

The backrest tilts between upright, a reclined lounging position and flat. It clicks into place at each angle. It is quick, compact and needs no pulling out, so the sofa keeps its footprint when open. Our click-clack sofa beds are the simplest option for occasional use.

Pull-out

The bed folds out from inside the sofa body. The result is a more conventional bed surface, often with a proper mattress. It takes more floor space when open but is usually more comfortable for multiple nights.

Futon-style and folding

The seat and back fold down together into one flat surface. Simple and affordable, and popular in studios and student rooms.

Corner sofa bed

A larger L-shaped sofa with a fold-out or extendable section, often with storage underneath for bedding. These suit family rooms.

How big is it when open?

Measure the sofa open as well as closed. A sofa bed needs clear floor space in front, and the bed length can be up to twice the depth. Check that doors can still open, and that you can walk around it.

Comfort for guests

For an occasional night, any design will do. For regular use or longer stays, look at mattress thickness and the surface under the sleeper. A mattress topper makes a big difference for little money.

Practical checks

  • Weight limit. Listings state a maximum load for the sofa and sometimes separately for the bed.
  • Ease of conversion. You should be able to do it alone without effort.
  • Storage. Under-seat storage for bedding keeps the room tidy.
  • Fabric. Faux leather wipes clean, which is helpful if it will be slept on.

Care of the mechanism

Open and close it slowly, keep the area clear, and do not stand or jump on the backrest while it is flat. A little care keeps hinges and springs working for years. Our care guide covers cleaning the upholstery.

Is a sofa bed right for you?

If someone will sleep on it every night, buy a proper bed. For guests, occasional use and flexibility, a sofa bed is hard to beat. Browse sofa beds to see the options.
