How Long Does a Sofa Last? Lifespan, Warning Signs and How to Extend It

What decides how long a sofa lasts, the signs it is wearing out and the habits that make it last longer.

There is no single answer to how long a sofa lasts, because it depends on how it is built and how it is used. A sofa that seats one person in a spare room can last decades. A family sofa used by five people every day is a different matter. These are the factors that decide it.

What decides the lifespan

  1. The frame. A rigid wooden frame is the backbone. If it creaks, wobbles or flexes, the sofa is on borrowed time.
  2. The filling. Foam density matters. High-density foam springs back; low-density flattens quickly. Springs underneath add support.
  3. The upholstery. Hard-wearing fabric resists rubbing and pilling. Furniture fabrics are tested by rubbing machines: fabrics rated for domestic use typically withstand many thousands of rubs, and heavier-duty fabrics tens of thousands.
  4. Use. More people, more hours, more children and more pets mean faster wear.
  5. Care. A sofa that is plumped, rotated and kept away from heat lasts longer.

Warning signs

  • The seat has a permanent dip that does not recover after you stand.
  • The frame creaks or flexes when you sit on the arm.
  • Cushions are lumpy, flat or have lost shape.
  • The fabric is thin, bald or splitting at seams.
  • Springs can be felt through the seat.

Repair or replace?

New cushion covers or foam inserts can revive a sofa with a sound frame. If the frame is broken, the springs have failed or the fabric is worn throughout, replacement is usually the better value.

How to make it last

  1. Rotate and plump cushions weekly, and swap seats so one spot does not take all the wear.
  2. Vacuum regularly to stop grit abrading the fabric.
  3. Keep it out of sunlight and away from radiators.
  4. Stay within the weight limit and discourage jumping.
  5. Clean it properly. See our cleaning guide.
  6. Use a throw on the favourite seat.

Choosing for longevity

Look for a solid frame, spring support, foam filling and a fabric suited to your household (see fabrics compared). Check listed weight limits and read the specifications. Then browse the sofas.
