Cloud and Boneless Sofas Explained: How They Work and How to Look After Them
What a cloud or boneless sofa is, how compressed delivery works, how long to wait for it to expand and whether one suits your home.
Cloud sofas and "boneless" sofas have gone from a social-media trend to a staple of UK living rooms. They look soft, deep and relaxed, and they arrive in a box. If you are wondering what they are and whether one is right for you, here is the plain version.
What does "boneless" mean?
A boneless sofa has no hard exterior frame. Instead of a wooden skeleton, the sofa is built from thick foam sections wrapped in fabric. That is what gives the soft, pillowy, cloud-like look, with no hard edges to lean on.
Why they arrive compressed
Foam can be compressed and vacuum-packed into a box much smaller than the finished sofa. That makes delivery easier and means they get through small doorways and stairs that a built sofa could not. Modular cloud sofas are often delivered as several compressed sections that connect together.
Unboxing and expanding
When you open the box, the foam begins to recover its shape. It is not instant:
- Unpack in the room where it will live, with space around you.
- Remove packaging carefully, using scissors, away from the fabric.
- Pat and squeeze the cushions to help them expand and even out.
- Leave it for a day or two. The deepest sections can take up to 72 hours.
Do not judge it in the first hour. A freshly opened cloud sofa looks flat and wrinkly, and that is normal.
How they feel
Deep seats and soft filling are the point. They are brilliant for lounging, curling up and sprawling, and less ideal if you like to sit upright or have knees or hips that prefer a firmer, higher seat. Check the listed seat depth and think about how you actually sit.
Are they durable?
The foam density and quality matter more than the shape. A good cloud sofa uses high-density foam that springs back, while a poor one will flatten sooner. Plump and rotate cushions regularly and keep within the weight limit.
Layouts
Most are modular. Sections can be arranged as an L-shape, a straight sofa or separate seats. Measure your room and sketch layouts before you order. See our corner sofa guide for tips on layouts.
Care
Vacuum weekly with a soft brush, blot spills and avoid soaking. Corduroy and chenille, the two common cloud sofa fabrics, each have their own care steps in our cleaning guide.
Who they suit
Cloud sofas suit relaxed living rooms, families who love a film night, renters who might move and anyone who likes to rearrange. If you prefer a formal look or a firm seat, a traditional 3 seater may suit better.
