How to Seat Everyone at Christmas: A Sofa and Seating Plan
Plan your Christmas seating: how many people a sofa really seats, how to fit the tree, spare beds for guests and easy ways to make the room cosy.
Christmas is the one day of the year when the living room has to seat the most people and hold the most stuff. A bit of planning beats a scramble on the morning. These are the seating decisions that matter, whatever the size of your home.
Count your guests, then count your seats
Write down who is coming. For every sofa, take the listed seat count and subtract one for comfort: a "3 seater" is comfortable for two adults and a child, or three adults who are very friendly. For a crowd:
| Sofa | Comfortable for | Squeezed for |
|---|---|---|
| 2 seater | 2 adults | 3 with a child |
| 3 seater | 3 adults | 4 with a child |
| Corner (4 to 5 seats) | 4 adults | 5 to 6 |
| 3+2 set | 5 adults | 6 to 7 |
Add dining chairs, a pouffe or a footstool to fill gaps. See our sofa sets and corner sofas for larger seating.
Where does the tree go?
Trees take more room than people expect. Leave about a metre between the tree and the sofa, keep it away from radiators and out of walkways, and keep the cables tidy. If the room is small, a slimmer tree in a corner beats a full one in the middle.
Overnight guests
If family stays over, a sofa bed means a proper place to sleep without losing a bedroom. Click-clack designs open quickly and keep a small footprint. Plan bedding in advance and clear the space in front so it can open fully.
Spills, mulled wine and gravy
December tests upholstery. Keep a throw or two to hand, and a clean cloth for blotting. Blot spills, do not rub, and check the care guide for your fabric. Faux leather and leather wipe clean most easily.
Make the room cosy
- Layer light. A floor lamp and a table lamp feel warmer than one overhead light.
- Add texture. Chunky throws, a velvet cushion, a wool rug.
- Create zones. A corner for the children, a corner for the grown-ups.
- Clear surfaces. Fewer small tables means more floor and more flow.
Plan ahead for the sofa itself
If a new sofa is on your Christmas list, order with plenty of time: allow for delivery, unpacking and, if it is compressed, time for it to expand fully. Measure first (see how to measure for a sofa) and check the delivery information at checkout.
A simple Christmas Day checklist
