The short guide
How to choose a sofa in five steps
1. Start with the room, not the sofa
Measure the wall the sofa will sit against and mark the footprint on the floor with masking tape. Leave a walkway of about 60cm in front, and a gap at each end so it does not look squeezed in. Then measure the route it has to take to get there: front door, hallway, stairs and turns. Most failed deliveries are a measuring problem, not a sofa problem.
2. Pick the type that matches how you live
A two-seater suits a small room or a second sofa. A three-seater is the classic family sofa. A corner sofa seats the whole household and uses a corner efficiently. A modular cloud sofa can be rearranged. A sofa bed doubles as a guest bed.
3. Choose the fabric for your household
Corduroy is warm, textured and hides everyday marks. Velvet feels plush and looks rich but wants gentler care. Chenille is soft and cosy. Linen-look weaves are light and airy. Faux leather and leather wipe clean in seconds, which suits homes with children and pets. Each product page carries a care guide written for its upholstery.
4. Check seat depth and support
A deeper seat suits lounging; a shallower one is easier to get out of. Look for foam filling, spring support and a solid frame in the specifications, and note the maximum load where it is listed. Sit on your current sofa, measure its seat depth and compare.
5. Plan the delivery
Clear the route, have a second pair of hands ready, and unpack carefully. Compressed sofas need time to expand, anywhere from a day to 72 hours for the deepest foam. Keep the packaging for a few days so any problem is easy to sort out.
